Why the 18th?
According to the Tax Code filing deadlines can't fall on Saturday, Sunday or holidays. Emancipation Day in Washington, D.C. is normally celebrated on 4-16, but since that was a Saturday this year it was observed one day early. The IRS had to move Tax Day to the 18th to be lawful. The last time Tax Day was moved for this purpose happened in 2007; however, many forms had been printed before it was discovered. Emancipation Day became a holiday in 2005 in Washington, D.C.. The District of Columbia Emancipation Compensation Act freed some 3,000 slaves in the District of Columbia about nine months before Lincoln issued his famous Emancipation Proclamation. It is interesting to note that The District of Columbia Emancipation Compensation Act is the only time the federal government compensated former slave owners for their emancipated slaves.
Enjoy a Caesar Salad on Monday!
